[HOW TO] - Fix "can't mount dbdata" error SGS

  • E:failed to mount /sdcard (files exists), E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount /sdcard.
  • E:Can't mount /dev/block/stl10 (invalid Argument)
Note: This method works with the Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
If you have a different Galaxy S (like i9000b, i9003 etc) and you managed to fix the problem using this guide please leave a comment and say which model you have.
If you ever see the messages above when you enter the recovery mode follow the instruction below to fix it!
This happens when you run repartition with a new .PIT file. When you do that the partition that include the dbdata file will change and the old one will become unavailable.

TESTED DEVICES

GT-I9000, GT-I9000B, GT-I9000T, GT-P1000L, Captivate SGH-I897, SHW-M110S, Infuse SGH-I997

NECESSARY FILES AND SOFTWARE

Make sure you have the following:
  1. Your Device
  2. Odin
  3. dbdata.rfs.tar
FIXING THE PROBLEM
  1. Extract Odin
  2. Launch Odin.exe
  3. Click the PDA button and choose the dbdata.rfs.tar file you downloaded
  4. Make sure Re-Partition is unchecked
  5. Boot your SGS into DOWNLOAD MODE
    • To do it hold down the Home, Volume Down and the Power button
  6. Connect your device to your computer with the usb cable
  7. If your device is connected Odin will recognise it
  8. Click Start in Odin and wait
  9. When the process is completed your device will restart
  10. That's it! No more dbdata errors!

      Don't use any pit files!

If this ROM fixes your problem, then flash the ROM you want.

    1. Do the following:

      - Power off your device.
      - Remove the battery for 30 seconds.
      - Replace the battery.
      - Press and hold the Volume Down and Home buttons.
      - Then press the power button.
      - Wait until the Samsung logo appears and then release the power button. (Don't release the other two.)

If it still doesn't work then do it again a couple of times.
If you still can't get into Download mode then something is wrong and in order to fix it you need a device called USB Jig.

  127. I have a Samsung Galaxy S I9000
I start Odin3 v1.3 (also tried with Odin3_v1.0). After starting the phone in Download Mode, I connect it to PC using USB cable. However, I do not see an indication in Odin UI that the device is recognized.

I select the PDA and select the dbdata.rfs.tar file. On clicking Start I see the message:
All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

I'm not sure if I'm missing something basic. Please help.

  128. Update 1:

I tried with a different USB port...this time the device was recognized. However, the operation was not successful. Could you please let me know what I'm missing? Thanks.

    File analysis..
    SetupConnection..
    Initialzation..
    Get PIT for mapping..
    Firmware update start..
    dbdata.rfs
    Complete(Write) operation failed.
All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

  129. Update 2:

    Added!!
    Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
    File analysis..
    SetupConnection..
    Initialzation..
    Get PIT for mapping..
    Firmware update start..
    dbdata.rfs
    Removed!!
    Completed..
All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)

But in the recovery mode, I still get the same message:

E:failed to mount /sdcard (File exists)
    E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount /sdcard
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot options.

Desperately looking for a solution to this. I have photos and videos of my kids on the phone, which I do not want to erase. Please help. Thanks.

    1. Do the following:
(in order to backup your photos/videos)
      1) Go to Recovery Mode
      2) Go to mounts and storage
      3) Connect your device to your computer
      4) Click mount USB storage
      5) Go to your computer and backup your photos/videos

Then do a factory reset, wipe everything in recovery (format SD card etc.) and try my tutorial again.

    2. As mentioned in step 2 above, there is no "mounts and storage"...where do I find this ? Thanks.

    3. Which Android version are you running?

If you don't see "mounts and storage" then "ClockworkMod" isn't installed on your device.

To install "ClockworkMod" follow the steps here:
      1) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734166

      or here:
      2) http://theunlockr.com/2012/11/22/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000/

Then go to recovery mode and follow the steps in my previous message.

      I hope this helps.

    4. Installed ClockworkMod...now I see the options. But when I select the mount USB storage, I see this error "E:Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory!). Also I still keep getting the "E:Can't mount /sdcard".

    5. There might be an issue with your SD card.
Remove your SD card and try it again.

    6. I only have a internal SD card. How do I remove it? Thank you for your patience in responding to my queries. I'm so grateful to you. Thanks.

    7. There is no way to remove the internal SD.
Get an external SD and then try again.
If it still doesn't work then backup your files through Recovery and then flash a stock ROM to get your device working again.
